Let's Talk About What's Actually on Your Lawn

Hands in the dirt before anyone thinks to wash them. That's a completely different exposure picture — and it's the one that actually matters. What the Science Actually Says About Kids
This is where I have to put on my engineer hat for a second, because the biology here is actually really important and it gets glossed over a lot.
Kids aren't just small adults. Their bodies process chemicals differently. And they're exposed in ways adults typically aren't.

The Part That Actually Worried Me
It's not just about how much exposure kids get. It's when. The National Institutes of Health has spent years studying this, and the consistent finding is that children are more vulnerable to environmental toxicants specifically because their organs are still forming. A developing nervous system is in a different category than a fully developed adult one.
Research published in Environmental Health Perspectives — a peer-reviewed journal out of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences — found links between early childhood exposure to organophosphate pesticides and lower IQ scores and increased ADHD-like behavior.
The herbicide 2,4-D, which is in a lot of weed-and-feed products (you've probably seen it on the bag without noticing), has been classified as possibly carcinogenic by some international health agencies. Studies in farming communities have suggested a connection to non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
Glyphosate — the active ingredient in Roundup and most generic weed killers — is the most controversial one. The International Agency for Research on Cancer called it a probable human carcinogen in 2015. The science is genuinely still debated. But when I'm thinking about where my kids play every day, "still debated" isn't a category I'm comfortable in.
Quick note: I'm not a doctor, and the science on lawn chemicals and kids is still evolving. Risk levels vary a lot between products. What I'm saying is this: when there's a safer option that works just as well, why not take it?
And Your Dog? She's Getting a Much Higher Dose Than You Think
I actually think dogs are at higher risk from yard chemicals than kids are — and it doesn't get talked about nearly enough.
Think about what your dog does outside. She walks on the grass with bare paws and licks them clean afterward. She rolls around. She sniffs right at ground level where residues are most concentrated. She grooms her belly and legs with her mouth. There's basically no barrier between her and whatever's sitting on that lawn.
The veterinary research on this is pretty sobering. A study published in Environmental Research found that dogs in homes where herbicides containing 2,4-D were professionally applied had twice the risk of canine malignant lymphoma compared to dogs in untreated yards. Twice.
Tufts University looked specifically at Scottish Terriers — already predisposed to bladder cancer — and found that exposure to phenoxy herbicides like 2,4-D pushed their risk up fourfold. Four times the risk of transitional cell carcinoma just from lawn herbicides.
Organophosphate insecticides are a different concern. These work by disrupting nerve function — it's literally how they kill bugs — and dogs can absorb enough through skin contact with recently treated grass to cause acute symptoms: drooling, tremors, in bad cases seizures. If you're still using conventional pesticides or herbicides:
Keep pets off treated areas for at least 48–72 hours. And even after that, residues can stick around on grass and in soil — especially when it's dry and nothing's washing them away.
Wash your dog's paws after she's been out on treated grass. It makes a real difference.
Here's the Part Nobody's Talking About
We spend a lot of time talking about what these chemicals do to us. Not enough time talking about what they do to the ground.
