Nature's Perfect Organic Fertilizer

Worm castings are what Red Wiggler worms produce after digesting organic matter. Yeah, it's basically worm poop. But that undersells what's actually happening here. As organic material passes through a worm's digestive system, it gets broken down, processed, and enriched with beneficial microorganisms. What comes out is nutrient-dense, microbe-rich, plant-available fertilizer in its most perfect natural form.

Our worm castings are Class A compost certified with third-party verification. That means they meet the highest standards for safety, quality, and pathogen reduction. You're getting premium vermicompost that's safe for edible crops, gentle enough for seedlings, and powerful enough to transform your garden.

What makes worm castings special is the combination of slow-release nutrition and living soil biology. The nutrients are in organic forms that plants can access immediately, but they release gradually over months. Plus, you're adding billions of beneficial microorganisms that improve soil structure, protect plants from disease, and make other nutrients more available. It's complete plant nutrition with a thriving microbial ecosystem built right in.

Why Worm Castings Work So Well

Complete Balanced Nutrition

  • All essential macro and micronutrients plants need
  • NPK in perfect plant-available ratios
  • Trace minerals often missing from depleted soil
  • Natural growth hormones and enzymes
  • Slow-release feeding that lasts for months

Worm castings contain nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc—everything plants need in balanced ratios. The vermicomposting process makes these nutrients more available than they'd be in regular compost. Plants can access what they need immediately, with reserves that release slowly over time.

Living Soil Biology

  • Billions of beneficial bacteria per gram
  • Mycorrhizal fungi that extend root systems
  • Natural disease suppression compounds
  • Improved soil structure and drainage
  • Enhanced nutrient cycling in the soil

The real magic of worm castings is the microbial life. As material passes through worms' digestive systems, it gets inoculated with beneficial organisms. These microbes colonize your soil, breaking down organic matter, fixing nitrogen, and protecting plants from pathogens. You're not just adding fertilizer—you're rebuilding soil ecology.

Won't Burn Plants

  • Gentle slow-release nutrition
  • Safe for seedlings and transplants
  • Impossible to over-apply
  • No salt buildup like synthetic fertilizers
  • pH neutral to slightly alkaline

This is huge for gardeners worried about burning tender plants. Synthetic fertilizers can damage roots if you apply too much. Worm castings? You could practically grow seedlings in pure castings and they'd be fine. The nutrients release slowly as plants need them, not all at once.

Improves Soil Structure

  • Creates better drainage in heavy clay soils
  • Increases water retention in sandy soils
  • Produces stable humus that lasts years
  • Improves soil aggregation and tilth
  • Enhances root penetration and growth

Worm castings physically improve soil texture. The casting particles help clay soils drain better by creating spaces for air and water. In sandy soils, castings increase water retention. And the microbial activity produces compounds that bind soil particles into stable aggregates. Your soil gets better with every application.

How to Use Worm Castings

Four Easy Application Methods

Worm castings are versatile. Use them however makes sense for your growing situation.

Mix into Potting Soil

Blend 10-20% worm castings with potting mix, garden soil, or raised bed amendments. For containers, use 1-2 lbs per 10 lbs of soil. This creates living soil from the start with built-in nutrition and beneficial microbes.

Side Dress Existing Plants

Spread 1/4 to 1/2 inch of castings around plant bases. Work gently into the top inch of soil or just water it in. Reapply every 4-6 weeks during growing season for continuous feeding. Perfect for established gardens and perennials.

Make Worm Casting Tea

Steep 1 cup castings in 1 gallon water for 24-48 hours. Strain and use as foliar spray or soil drench. For aerated tea with more microbes, bubble air through the mixture while steeping. The liquid delivers fast-acting nutrition.

Seed Starting Mix

Add 10-20% castings to seed starting mix for stronger seedlings with better disease resistance. The gentle nutrition won't burn tender roots, and the microbes protect against damping off. Seedlings started in casting-enriched mix establish faster when transplanted.

Worm Castings vs. Other Fertilizers

Factor Worm Castings Synthetic Fertilizer Regular Compost
Nutrient Availability Immediately available, slow release Immediate, short duration Slow release, less available
Risk of Burning None High if misapplied None
Beneficial Microbes Billions per gram Kills soil life Good levels
Nutrient Density Very high Concentrated NPK only Moderate
Soil Structure Significantly improves No improvement Improves moderately
Duration of Effect 3-6 months 2-4 weeks 2-4 months
Environmental Impact Positive Harmful runoff Positive

Class A Compost Certification

Not all worm castings are created equal. Ours are Class A compost certified with third-party verification. Here's what that means:

  • Pathogen-Free: Class A certification requires testing to ensure harmful bacteria and pathogens are eliminated. Safe for use on all food crops with no wait time before harvest.
  • Heavy Metal Testing: Verified to be below EPA limits for heavy metals. No contamination from industrial waste or questionable feedstocks.
  • Quality Standards: Meets strict requirements for nutrient content, moisture levels, and particle size. Consistent quality batch to batch.
  • Third-Party Verified: Independent testing confirms our castings meet all standards. Not just our word—verified by accredited labs.

This certification matters if you're growing food or want premium results. It's the difference between professional-grade vermicompost and backyard worm bin scraps.

Mid summer vegetable garden with ripe tomatoes

Perfect For Every Growing Situation

Vegetable Gardens

Mix worm castings into beds before planting for season-long nutrition. Side dress heavy feeders like tomatoes and peppers every 4-6 weeks. The balanced nutrition and beneficial microbes create ideal conditions for productive vegetable growing. Safe for organic certification.

Container Gardens

Potting mix depletes quickly in containers. Mixing in 10-20% worm castings at potting time provides lasting nutrition without the salt buildup you get from synthetic fertilizers. Top dress containers monthly during growing season to maintain fertility.

Houseplants

Add castings to potting mix when repotting, or top dress established houseplants with a thin layer every few months. The gentle nutrition and beneficial microbes create healthier plants with better disease resistance. Perfect for sensitive houseplants that burn easily with synthetic fertilizers.

Seed Starting

Worm castings in seed starting mix produce stronger seedlings with better survival rates. The microbes protect against damping off disease, and the gentle nutrition doesn't burn tender roots. Seedlings grow faster and transplant with less shock.

Lawns and Turf

Top dress lawns with a thin layer of castings (about 1/4 inch) in spring and fall. The nutrition feeds grass while microbes improve soil health. Better than synthetic lawn fertilizers that create quick green-up but degrade soil over time.

Fruit Trees and Perennials

Apply castings around the drip line of trees and established perennials. The slow-release nutrition supports steady growth without forcing unnatural flushes that attract pests. Reapply 2-3 times yearly for ongoing soil improvement.

Storage tip: Keep worm castings in the resealable bag in a cool, dry place. The microbes go dormant when dry and reactivate when you add them to moist soil. Even after years of storage, castings retain their nutritional value and microbial benefits.

How Much You Need

Coverage depends on application method:

  • 2 lb bag: Treats 20-40 square feet of garden beds when mixed at 20%, or makes potting mix for 4-6 large containers
  • 10 lb bag: Treats 100-200 square feet of garden beds, or makes potting mix for 20-30 large containers
  • Side dressing: 2 lbs covers about 80 square feet at 1/4 inch depth, 10 lbs covers 400 square feet
  • Worm tea: 2 lbs makes 32 gallons of tea, 10 lbs makes 160 gallons

Common Questions About Worm Castings

What are worm castings and how do they work as fertilizer?

Worm castings (also called vermicompost) are the nutrient-rich waste produced by Red Wiggler worms as they digest organic matter. They contain all essential plant nutrients in immediately available forms, plus billions of beneficial microorganisms that improve soil structure, protect plants from disease, and enhance nutrient availability. Unlike synthetic fertilizers, worm castings provide slow-release nutrition that won't burn plants.

How do I use worm castings in my garden?

Mix worm castings at 10-20% into potting soil or garden beds before planting. For established plants, side dress by spreading castings around the base and working into the top inch of soil. You can also make worm casting tea by steeping castings in water for 24 hours, then using as liquid fertilizer. Reapply every 4-6 weeks throughout the growing season.

Can worm castings burn my plants?

No! Worm castings are one of the safest fertilizers available. The nutrients are in slow-release organic forms that plants access as needed. It's virtually impossible to over-apply worm castings—they're gentle enough for seedlings and safe even in high concentrations. This makes them perfect for gardeners worried about burning tender plants.

What's the difference between worm castings and regular compost?

Worm castings are more nutrient-dense than regular compost, with higher levels of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and micronutrients. The vermicomposting process creates nutrients in more plant-available forms. Castings also contain more beneficial microorganisms and natural growth hormones. They're essentially super-charged compost that's been processed through worms' digestive systems.

Are your worm castings organic and certified?

Yes! Our worm castings are 100% organic with no synthetic additives or chemicals. They're Class A compost certified with third-party verification, meeting the highest standards for safety and quality. This certification ensures the castings are pathogen-free and safe for use on edible crops.

How much do I need for my garden?

For new beds, use 2-4 lbs per 10 square feet when mixing into soil. For containers, mix 10-20% castings with your potting mix. For side dressing established plants, use about 1/4 cup per plant monthly. The 2 lb bag treats about 20-40 square feet, while the 10 lb bag covers 100-200 square feet depending on application method.

How do I make worm casting tea?

Add 1 cup of worm castings to 1 gallon of water. Let steep for 24-48 hours, stirring occasionally. For aerated tea (more beneficial microbes), use an aquarium pump to bubble air through the mixture. Strain and use immediately as a foliar spray or soil drench. The liquid fertilizer provides fast-acting nutrition while the solids can be added back to your garden.

Do worm castings expire or go bad?

Worm castings don't expire if stored properly. Keep them in the resealable bag in a cool, dry place. The beneficial microorganisms go dormant when dry and reactivate when moistened. Even after years of storage, castings retain their nutritional value and microbial activity. Just keep them away from extreme heat and moisture.

I am not sure which one of the products I purchased that has been so helpful for my plants, the ‘Elm Dirt’ or the Worm Castings since I use them together. I just purchased many succulents and some garden plants. They are all thriving since I started using the products. I will definitely continue to use both products since I have never had any luck with keeping them alive!

My garden is doing well. I was hoping to use the fertilizer as well. I thought I ordered the Plant Juice on the same order, but i haven't received it. Am I mistaken? Please check my last order. Thank you. Carol

Neutral on this since I have not used it yet but worm castings are worm castings

Worm Castings

This is my third summer using the products from elm dirt. The Plant Juice works equally well indoors as well as outdoors, and gives your plants gentle support at the roots which translates to healthier plants. The Bloom Juice is equally wonderful, and I use it on things getting ready to bloom. If it's already bloomed, you don't want to encourage energy into forming new blooms, you want to support vegetative growth, which Plant Juice does extraordinarily well. Underneath all of this is my regular use of worm castings the last 2 years. When adding any new material to the soil, I include worm castings. Also when planting, I make sure and put some in the planting hole. If I forget for some reason, I know I can just top dress it and water it in and it will still work. If you're tired of trying to grow plants in soil continuing to deplete without the sources it needs to support your plants, give Elm Dirt a try. I trust you will not be disappointed!

Worm Castings

Always trust Elm Dirt with my orders. Shipping is slow but I always receive my order.

Worm Castings

The worm castings have greatly helped all my repotted plants stay healthy and happy. It’s a great addition to your soil for your plants indoors or outdoors!

Worm Castings

Great products

Worm Castings

Tomatoes and peppers were sad in a tired raised bed until I dug in some worm castings. Now they’re happy and thriving.

Worm Castings

My older plants have perked up and look much healthier.

Worm Castings

This product is superior for helping plants begin to develop within the soil more quickly as it aids in the development of a supportive structure for the roots and the plant. For example, I ordered 10 slips of sweet potato. I set them in water when I got them and their Roots perked right up as well as their leaves. Then when I planted them after I had dug the hole, I dipped each root system into the worm castings. I've never had a crop respond so enthusiastically to my sometimes spotty maintenance. I'm going to have sweet potatoes this fall! I trust that it was the worm castings that have made the difference. I intend to use it as a top dressing around existing plants, just as an aid to the improvement of the soil and support of the plants. I would recommend this to anyone who cares about their soil as well as their plants.

Worm Castings

My garden is totally NEW with adding the Elm Dirt products. Plant Juice and Bloom Juice are immediate results (within 24 hours). I have 21 Geranium pots which some are 8 years old and still bloom all year round. I have an unheated Sun Room and I bring in all my potted plants including 10 Herbs in pots in winter months (I live in Amarillo, TX). With amending the soil with worm castings twice a year is also very helpful as I don't re-pot anything.

Worm Castings

Just potted African violets babies. Hoping for the best!!

Worm Castings

First time trying this so wish me luck.

Worm Castings

Worm castings I always mix it in my soil and my plants love it. Nice bright green and healthy!

Worm Castings

I just started using it this week. Nothing to report back on.

Worm Castings

The plants seem to be greener and stronger, especially in the heat. My tomato starts are super strong!

Worm Castings

A business that makes it virtually impossible to delay or cancel a subscription order automatically loses all respect from me. It seems underhanded that you can email me when it’s been processed, but not email me in advance and allow me to skip or delay shipping. Also when there is no clear way on your website to manage your account it seems deceptive. I really like your products but don’t respect deceptive subscription processes.

Worm Castings

So far my flowers are thriving. The rest I have saved for planting vegetables in my garden. Will be mixing in to the holes as I plant. Then using plant juice to water with.

Worm Castings

The Elm Dirt products are very very good. They give my flowers such a healthy look and the best flowers. I think these products make the difference to a beautiful yard !
