Garden Soil vs. Potting Mix: Which One Are You Actually Supposed to Use Where?

Short answer: potting mix goes in pots, garden soil goes in the ground.

Garden soil is actual mineral soil — heavy stuff, holds its shape, hangs onto water for days. It's meant for beds and for planting straight into the earth.

Potting mix usually doesn't have any real soil in it at all. It's peat or coconut coir with perlite and bark mixed through, so it stays light and drains fast in a container.

Get them backwards and you land in one of the two most common home-garden failures: rotted roots in your pots, or beds that are bone dry by lunchtime. And there's a third thing neither bag will tell you, which is that most of the living biology has already been cooked out of both of them.

You know the moment I mean. You're standing in the garden aisle with a cart, and there's a bag that says garden soil and a bag that says potting mix and about nine other bags that all look like the same brown stuff photographed from different angles. They're within four dollars of each other. I have asked employees at three different stores to explain the difference and gotten three different answers, one of which was a shrug.

I got pulled into all this sideways. My daughter was a baby, in the phase where everything on earth goes directly into the mouth, and she got a fistful of dirt out of our own backyard before I could stop her. And I stood there — chemical engineer, supposedly the person in the family who knows what things are made of — realizing I had no earthly idea what was in that handful. That question is why Elm Dirt exists.

Anyway. The bags. They're more different than the labels let on, and picking wrong has consequences your plants will explain to you in their own time. Usually by dying.

The Cheat Sheet (Screenshot This One)

Potting mix → anything with a bottom and drainage holes. Pots, planters, hanging baskets, the window box your neighbor talked you into.

Garden soil → anything sitting on or in the earth. In-ground beds, raised beds, big planting areas.

Honestly, that's the whole thing. The rest of this is the why, which is where people get tangled up, so stay with me a minute.

What Garden Soil Actually Is

Garden soil is real dirt — mineral particles, sand and silt and clay, usually cut with some compost. It's heavy, it holds its shape when you squeeze it, and it's designed to live in the ground where it's got room to spread out and stay connected to everything around it.

Think about what soil does out in a field with nobody managing it. It anchors roots, holds moisture between rains, and quietly runs an entire ecosystem of worms and fungi and microbes you'll never see.

Reach for garden soil when you're working on:

  • In-ground vegetable and flower beds
  • Raised beds, blended with compost — full walkthrough in my raised bed guide
  • Filling or amending a big planting area
  • Anywhere the soil is touching actual earth

The catch is that garden soil is far too heavy for a pot. Give it four or five waterings in a container and it packs down into something closer to modeling clay. Water sits on top. Roots can't get air. Which brings us to the other bag, the one you probably grabbed for your houseplants.

What Potting Mix Actually Is

Potting mix is the light, fluffy stuff, and here's the part that surprises people: most of it isn't soil. It's a soilless blend — peat moss or coconut coir, plus perlite for air pockets and bark for structure.

Why leave the dirt out? Because a pot is a tiny sealed-off world with nowhere for extra water to go. Roots in there need oxygen, and water has to move through quickly so they're not sitting in it. Put real garden soil in that little world and you've made a soggy brick with a plant stuck in the top.

Side note, because this one trips people up constantly and I get emailed about it: "potting mix" and "potting soil" aren't the same thing either. One's typically soilless, one usually has some real soil in it, and the bags do a terrible job distinguishing them. I untangled that in potting mix vs. potting soil.

The Two Mistakes Almost Everybody Makes

I see these two constantly, and neither one means you're bad at gardening. They mean the bags are labeled badly.

Mistake #1: Garden soil in pots

This is the big one. You repot the fiddle leaf fig with a bag of garden soil, feel good about yourself, and three weeks later the lower leaves go yellow and start dropping. The top of the soil is still damp from last time you watered.

So you assume you're overwatering, and you back off, and it keeps getting worse. But you weren't overwatering. The soil just would not let go of anything you gave it, and the roots have been sitting in a wet sponge with no air for a month.

Mistake #2: Potting mix in the ground

Less deadly, more expensive. Potting mix is engineered to drain fast inside a small pot, and that's a virtue in a pot. Spread it across an open bed and the same fast drainage turns on you. Come July you'll be out there with the hose twice a day wondering why everything's flat on its face by four in the afternoon.

Also, filling a 4x8 raised bed with bagged potting mix instead of garden soil and compost is a genuinely startling receipt. I did the math on it once for a customer who'd already done it, and neither of us enjoyed the conversation.

Quick gut check: does it have drainage holes and sit up off the ground? Potting mix. Does it sit in or on the earth? Garden soil. That's your tiebreaker when you're standing in the aisle.

What about mixing the two?

People ask this constantly, so: in a container, keep garden soil under about a quarter of the total volume, and toss in perlite or bark to keep some air in there. In a raised bed, blending is actually the right call — somewhere around 60% garden soil, 30% compost, 10% worm castings is a good place to start. Here's the Part Nobody Tells You

Whichever bag you pick, you're probably buying something that isn't alive anymore.

A lot of bagged potting mix gets heat-treated or steam-pasteurized before it's sold. That's not a scam — it kills weed seeds and pathogens, which you want. But heat doesn't sort the good from the bad. It takes everything. So the honest answer to "is potting soil sterile?" is mostly yes, and that's on purpose.

Garden soil at least starts out alive. It just doesn't stay that way through a season of watering, tilling, harvesting, and whatever the weather decides to do. And the biology is not a nice-to-have. Plants don't eat dirt — they trade with microbes that pry nutrients loose, fend off disease organisms, and manufacture actual plant hormones. What we actually found when we tested ours

This is where I go full engineer for a minute, so bear with me or skip ahead, no hard feelings.

We sent Plant Juice off to BiomeMakers for DNA sequencing, and it came back with 291 verified microbial species (that's report CUX005, if you like a paper trail). The count is fun, but what I actually care about is the functional side — what the lab could confirm those organisms are equipped to do:

  • 84% can produce auxin (IAA), which is the main hormone behind root and shoot growth
  • 82% carry ACC deaminase, which is how plants ride out heat and drought stress without stalling
  • 80% help release nitrogen in a form roots can actually take up
  • 70% produce cytokinins, which drive leaf and shoot development
  • 56% have antifungal or biocontrol ability, keeping the troublemakers outnumbered
  • 27% unlock phosphorus that's otherwise chemically locked up and useless to the plant

Some of the names doing that work, all of them confirmed in our CUX005 report:

  • Trichoderma spirale — a fungal bodyguard that moves into the root zone and crowds rot organisms out. Especially useful in pots, where rot is the whole ballgame.
  • Mortierella — ten separate species turned up in ours, which frankly surprised me. It's tied closely to phosphorus availability and healthy root zones.
  • Pseudomonas putida — one of the most heavily studied root-colonizing bacteria in all of plant science, mostly for disease suppression.
  • Bacillus species — ours include Bacillus thermoamylovorans, one of those tough spore-formers that can wait out bad conditions in soil.
  • Penicillium simplicissimum — yes, that Penicillium, same family tree. Solubilizes nutrients, suppresses pathogens.
  • Streptomyces — three species. This is the genus most soil antibiotics were originally pulled out of, which tells you something about how it competes.

How to Bring Both Kinds of Soil Back to Life

Here's the good news, and I mean this: you don't need a chemistry degree for this part. I have one, and it's not doing any of the work. You just put the living part back in. There are two ways to do it and they work together.

1. Inoculate with worm castings

Microbes are alive, which means they eat, which means this isn't a one-time job. This is the step people skip, and over a full season it's the one that decides how things go.
