• 40% whole milk (that's roughly 1 1/4 cups per quart of final mix)
• 60% water (about 1 3/4 cups)
• Optional: a small pinch of baking soda
How it works: This one sounds completely made up, but researchers in Brazil actually proved it — a 40% milk spray performed as well as synthetic fungicides against powdery mildew on zucchini. The proteins in milk react with sunlight and produce compounds that kill off the fungus. Use whole milk, not skim — the fat matters. And yes, your plants will smell a little funky for a day. • 1 tablespoon neem oil
• 1 teaspoon liquid dish soap (this is your emulsifier — it helps the oil mix with water)

How it works: Neem oil contains a compound called azadirachtin that basically disrupts fungal growth. How to Keep It From Coming Back: 5 Things That Actually Help
Crowded plants create little humid microclimates right at leaf level — exactly where mildew wants to be. Those spacing recommendations on plant tags aren't just suggestions. They genuinely matter, and this is one of those cases where ignoring them bites you later.
Use a soaker hose, drip irrigation, or just aim your watering wand at the soil. Wet leaves — especially if they stay wet overnight — are an open invitation for fungal problems of all kinds.
On squash, cucumbers, and other mildew-prone plants, cut out any branches growing inward and crowding up the center. More airflow means way less mildew. It really is that simple.
