What I Learned From Killing 47 Houseplants (And What Finally Worked)

The short answer

Houseplants usually die from three things: too much water, the wrong light, and dead bagged potting soil. Overwatering is the biggest culprit, because soggy soil pushes out the air roots need and they suffocate, then rot.

Water only when the top two inches of soil are dry. Match the plant to the light that spot actually gets. And feed the soil with living microbes instead of synthetic salts, so the roots have a working system to feed them.

I'm a chemical engineer. I can balance an equation in my head, and for about three years I could not keep a pothos alive.

Forty-seven is the real number, and the only reason I know it is I started keeping a tally in my phone. Not for any good reason. I think I just felt guilty every time I went and bought another one, and writing it down felt like admitting to something.

Ferns, mostly. A fiddle leaf fig that died twice, which I still don't entirely understand. Succulents I rotted from the bottom up. There was an orchid in there somewhere that I'm fairly sure just gave up on me.

So if you've ever stood in the garden center aisle quietly promising a plant you'll do better this time — I see you. I was you for years.

Here's what nobody told me though. I wasn't killing them by neglect. I was killing them by hovering.

I Counted. It Really Was 47.

I'm telling you the actual number because I want you to feel fine about yours. In my experience the people who call themselves plant killers aren't lazy at all — they're the opposite. They're over-carers, and nobody ever warns you that's a way to kill something.

We hover. We fuss with the leaves. We water every Sunday whether the plant wants it or not, because Sunday is when we water.

And the plant quietly drowns while we're congratulating ourselves on being attentive.

It wasn't until I quit blaming my black thumb and started treating the whole thing like a problem to diagnose — engineer brain, finally good for something around the house — that the pattern jumped out at me. Same three mistakes. Over and over, for years.

Fix these three and I'd bet you save more plants than you lose from here on out.

Mistake #1: I Was Loving Them To Death

Overwatering killed more of my plants than everything else put together, and it wasn't close.

My logic was simple and completely backwards: sad plant, thirsty plant. So I'd water it. It'd droop worse the next day. So I'd water it again, because obviously it needed more. You can see where this is headed.

What I didn't understand back then is that roots need air just as much as they need water. Fill up all that space in the soil with water and there's nowhere left for air to go, so the roots suffocate. Then rot moves in, and by the time you can smell it you're usually already in trouble.

How to tell thirsty from drowning

  • Yellow lower leaves and soft, mushy stems = too much water.
  • Crispy brown leaf tips and bone-dry soil pulling away from the pot = not enough.
  • A swampy smell from the pot = root rot starting. Act now.
  • Leaves drooping but soil still wet = drowning, not thirsty. This one fools everybody.
  • Fungus gnats hovering = your soil is staying wet too long. Here's my fix for gnats on indoor plants.

The fix is almost insulting in how simple it is. Stick your finger two inches down into the soil. If it's damp, walk away and go do something else.

That's the whole thing that took me three years and a lot of dead ferns to learn — water on the plant's clock instead of on mine. Quick gut-check: if you can't remember the last time your plant's soil dried out, that's your problem right there. Most houseplants want to dry out a little between drinks.

Mistake #2: I Put Them Wherever They Looked Cute

I once put a sun-loving plant on a dark bookshelf clear across the room because that's where it looked best. And it did look wonderful. Right up until it didn't.

Light is food. That's the piece I'd never really connected. A plant sitting in the wrong light is slowly starving no matter how perfect your watering gets, and no amount of fertilizer fixes a light problem.

You don't need a meter or an app for any of this. You just need to be honest with yourself about how much light that spot actually gets, then match the plant to it:

  • Bright, sunny windows: succulents, citrus, most flowering plants.
  • Bright but indirect: pothos, monstera, most leafy tropicals.
  • Low light corners: snake plants, ZZ plants, cast iron plants.

If the corner you love is dim, don't fight the room. Just pick a plant that's built for dim. I keep a running list of houseplants for low light for exactly this reason.

Mistake #3: I Was Feeding Dead Dirt

This one took me the longest to work out, and it's also the reason my whole company exists, so bear with me for a minute here.

That bag of potting mix you brought home from the store is basically sterile. It looks like dirt, it feels like dirt, it's just missing the part that makes dirt actually work.

Out in a garden bed, roots never work alone. They're trading sugars with billions of bacteria and fungi, and those microbes pay them back by unlocking nutrients, fending off disease, even sending signals that tell roots where to grow next. There's a whole economy running down there that none of us ever see.

So every time I poured that blue synthetic fertilizer into a dead pot, I was force-feeding a plant that had no system to use what I was handing it. (The reason I know any of this, by the way, is that my daughter went through a phase as a baby of eating dirt out of the backyard and I went looking for what was in it. That's a much longer story.)

What a struggling plant really needs is that crew back on the job. Here's a few of the workhorses our lab actually verified in our own soil biology:

  • Azospirillum — pulls nitrogen out of thin air and feeds it to roots.
  • Bacillus subtilis — defends roots against the fungi that cause rot.
  • Pseudomonas putida — frees up phosphorus that's locked in the soil.
  • Trichoderma — a beneficial fungus that builds a protective web around roots.
  • Mortierella — a soil fungus that helps roots reach further for water and food.

And I want to be clear this isn't garden-blog woo. It's fairly boring, well-documented soil science. There's a good body of peer-reviewed work on plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria over at PubMed Central if you're the sort who likes reading the actual papers, and the folks at Michigan State University Extension have a much friendlier write-up on why living soil matters.

The Thing That Finally Worked

Once it finally clicked that I'd been feeding dead dirt this whole time, the fix more or less wrote itself. Quit dumping salt on the problem and start putting the life back into the pot.

  4. For a plant that's really struggling, feed it and then leave it alone. Resist the urge to fuss.

First time I tried it on my own sad little survivors I honestly wasn't expecting much. Mixed a capful in, watered everybody, went about my week. Somewhere around day ten I noticed new growth on a plant I had already mentally thrown out.
