Short answer: Plant leaf color meaning comes down to where the change starts and what pattern it makes. Yellowing on the oldest, lowest leaves usually means a nitrogen shortage. Yellow leaves with green veins on new growth means an iron lockout. Brown crispy edges all around point to potassium or salt buildup. Soft yellowing with soggy soil is overwatering. Curling means heat, light, or pests.

I learned this the hard way. Before Elm Dirt existed I killed a peace lily my mom gave me, which still stings a little. It went yellow, then droopy, and then one Saturday I carried the whole pot out to the trash and decided I just had a black thumb. That plant had been telling me exactly what was wrong for about three weeks. I couldn't read it yet.
Because a leaf is basically a status report. And the part nobody mentions is that where the yellowing starts on the plant tells you more than the yellow itself does.
Once you can read that, you quit guessing. No more drowning a plant that was actually just thirsty.
So here's the 12 signs I get asked about most, what each one actually means, and what I'd do about it. No chemistry degree required — and I say that as somebody who has a chemical engineering degree and still had to learn all this from a dead peace lily.

The 12 Leaf Signs (and Exactly What To Do)
Lower leaves turning yellow, oldest first
What it means: Nitrogen. When a plant runs low on it, it does something kind of brilliant - it pulls nitrogen out of its old leaves to feed the new ones. So the bottom, oldest leaves go pale and yellow while the top stays green.
The fix: Feed it, but gently. Nitrogen is the one leaves want most, and the reason I harp on the organic side is that synthetic nitrogen comes in as a salt, which is fine right up until it isn't.
Living soil handles this on its own, by the way. Root-zone bacteria like Rhizobium and Bradyrhizobium - both DNA-verified in Plant Juice (BiomeMakers Report CUX005) - pull nitrogen out of the air and hand it to your plant. Yellow leaves with bright green veins (on the newest leaves)
What it means: This is a different kind of yellow. When it's the new leaves going yellow but the veins stay green, that's usually iron or a micronutrient that's locked up. Often the iron is right there in the soil - the plant just can't grab it, usually a pH or weak-biology problem.
The fix: Adding more iron usually does nothing here, which is the part that trips everybody up. What's missing is the soil life that pries it loose.
There's a whole crew of microbes called siderophore producers that handle this — they put out compounds that latch onto iron and hand it over in a form roots can actually take. Purple or reddish tint, especially on the undersides
What it means: Phosphorus. When a plant can't get enough, leaves often take on a dull purple or reddish cast, and growth slows way down. It shows up a lot in cool spring soil, when roots are sluggish.
The fix: Sometimes it's just patience, honestly, since warm soil fixes half of these on its own by June. The rest is microbes. Phosphorus-solubilizing bacteria turn locked-up phosphorus into something roots can actually drink.

Brown, crispy edges running all around the leaf
What it means: When the whole outer margin goes brown and crispy (not just the tip), think potassium shortage or salt buildup from over-fertilizing with synthetics. Potassium controls how a plant manages water, so when it's short, the edges suffer first.
The fix: Run water through the pot for a good minute or two and let it drain all the way out, which flushes the salt. Then switch to something that won't put more back. Soft yellowing all over + a mushy stem base, and the soil stays soggy
What it means: Overwatering, and this is the big one. Far more houseplants die of too much love than of neglect. Waterlogged soil has no air in it, roots can't breathe, and rot moves in fast.
The fix: Stop watering. I know. Let it dry out, tip the plant out and check whether that pot actually drains (a lot of the pretty ones don't), and snip off anything black and mushy. Then rebuild the root zone with microbes that crowd the rot out.

Limp and wilted - but the soil is bone dry
What it means: This is the opposite of Sign 5, and the soil tells you which is which. Wilting in dry soil means the plant is simply thirsty. The leaves usually perk back up within hours of a good drink.
The fix: Water deeply until it runs out the bottom. Going forward, water on a rhythm you can actually keep - I go through the whole method in how to water right, and pots dry out fastest, so see watering container gardens if yours live in containers.
Soil with good biology in it holds water better too. Plant Juice tested at 84% exopolysaccharide production, which is a mouthful, but it just means the microbes are making sticky compounds that help soil grab moisture and hang onto it. Practically speaking, your plant forgives you for the weekend you forgot.
Crispy brown tips only (the rest of the leaf is fine)
What it means: Just the very tips going brown usually points to the boring stuff - dry indoor air, fluoride or chlorine in tap water, or a little salt buildup. Common on spider plants, dracaenas, and prayer plants.
The fix: Switch to filtered or rested water. Here are the easiest ways to dechlorinate tap water - most of them take zero equipment.

Ease off the feeding, too. And if the brown tips bother you, snip them at an angle so it doesn't look chopped. The plant genuinely does not care either way.
The whole plant looks pale and washed out
What it means: When new growth comes in pale-green or yellowish all over (not in a pattern), the plant's just plain underfed - often short on nitrogen plus the trace nutrients that keep leaves a deep, healthy green.
The fix: A complete feed brings the color back, and this is where the living stuff really earns its keep, because you're not handing the plant two nutrients, you're handing it a whole food web.

Leaves curling, cupping, or twisting
What it means: Curling is the frustrating one because it's got a few possible causes. Heat stress will do it, since leaves cup inward to protect themselves. So will harsh light, or watering that swings from bone dry to soaked. But it's also what tiny pests on the undersides look like from above, so flip a leaf over and actually look before you change anything.
The fix: Heat or light, move the plant and get your watering on a steadier rhythm. Bugs, skip to Sign 10.

Holes, chewed edges, or tiny stippled dots
What it means: Something's eating. Big ragged holes are usually caterpillars or beetles having a good time. If instead you're seeing fine pale speckling, almost like the color got sanded off, that's spider mites or thrips. Sticky residue on the leaf or the shelf below it means aphids. Nearly all of them hide underneath, which is why people miss them for weeks.

Dark brown or black spots ringed with yellow halos
What it means: Spots with that telltale yellow ring usually mean a fungal or bacterial leaf spot disease - and it spreads, especially in warm, damp, crowded conditions.
The fix: Pull the spotted leaves off and throw them away rather than composting them. Give the plant some breathing room, and water down at the soil instead of over the top, since wet leaves are how it travels.
Long term, though, your best defense is just a soil that's already crowded with good guys. Leggy, stretched stems with small leaves spaced far apart
What it means: Light, plain and simple. All that stretching with big gaps between little leaves is the plant physically reaching for a window. Feeding it won't do a thing here, and I'd rather tell you that than sell you a bottle.

Once the light is right, then a feed helps it fill back in with strong, close-spaced new growth.
Here's the Pattern Most People Miss
Go back and look at those 12 signs again. Something like half of them (the yellowing, the washed-out color, the locked-up iron, the weak roots) come back around to the same culprit, which is tired soil.
Here's the bit that reframed everything for me when I was first digging into this. Plants don't really eat fertilizer. They eat what soil microbes hand them.
So when that underground crew is in good shape, nutrients get unlocked and roots get looked after and you barely notice, because nothing's going wrong. When the soil's been run down, usually by years of synthetic salt, the plant struggles no matter how much you pour on it.
